The Review

Seeing the bright neon signs of the Sheridan’s Frozen Custard shop on our way to dinner guaranteed that we would be leaving room for dessert on the way back to the hotel. Located in a strip mall parking lot, this walk up/drive through custard shop serves up fresh frozen custard all day. There aren’t too many frozen custard places in the Pacific Northwest. FYI, frozen custard is like ice cream but with a higher ratio of egg  yolks. At Sheridan’s, we always buy their concretes. What the heck is a concrete you ask? Think Dairy Queen Blizzard but, instead of wimpy ice milk, substitute a thick frozen custard. Yum! Most of us had to try the latest concrete specials. We aren’t in Vancouver, WA often, so chances are the next time we’re in town those particular special flavours won’t be available.

We covered both concrete specials (Red Velvet Crush and the Chocolate Kiss) plus a Grant’s Grasshopper concrete for good measure and then hopped into the car to enjoy them because it was too cold outside! Each concrete was blended so that you could still taste each item in the concrete yet enjoy the combined flavours as well. For example, while you could imagine it would be easy to obliterate it when blending, the texture of the cake in the Red Velvet Crush was still there in chunks. The chocolate in the Chocolate kiss was intense. Be sure you are a chocolate lover when you try an one of their chocolate concretes! The grasshopper concrete was what you would expect. Thick and minty with texture from the oreos and the chocolate chips.

Warning: the concretes are rich and filling. On previous visits we have purchased large sized (16 oz) concretes each in the “Go big or Go home” mentality but would end up struggling to finish because of the richness (especially immediately after a dinner). This time we went with regular sizes (12 oz) and were still feeling quite uncomfortable (this time again after a large meal). Next time if it is a post meal dessert, mini concretes for everyone!

The Review

Fondue was a New Year’s Eve staple for 8 years for us with a group of our friends. It is one of the most social eating experiences you can have. So when researching our Portland Food Tour, I was excited to see a fondue cart at the A La Carts pod. The small cart serves up variations of the cheese or chocolate fondue. Since we had a lot of food ahead of us but we wanted to try both kinds, we went with the smaller offerings of the cheese  and chocolate fondues.

The cheese fondue was served with toasted garlic french bread. The melted cheese was topped with a lemon garlic sauce.  This made the cheese amazingly light tasting and good depth of flavour. We couldn’t stop eating it. I wished I had gotten a bigger dish!

The melted chocolate tasted like it was a decent quality. Really smooth. It was great with the apples and (surprisingly) the icing sugared french bread.

This is a cart I definitely want to visit again on our next trip. I can’t believe we forgot to try their chocolate covered bacon!

Bubba Bernie’s – Brisket Sandwich with Au Jus

The Food

Bubba Bernies Brisket

Brisket Sandwich with Au Jus – Carved smoked beef brisket on bun with au jus.
Price: $9.00

Rating: ★★★★☆

The Review

Cartopia was our first stop on our whirlwind tour of Portland’s food carts. Here at Bubba Bernie’s, we picked up a beef brisket sandwich to share. The sandwich had some weight to it, piled high with smoked brisket. Brisket can be very dry if not done properly. Our sandwich at Bubba Bernie’s had very juicy brisket that had a good smoked meat flavour. The bun was soft but was tough enough to hold together with the meat and the au jus.  Speaking of the au jus, it was a good compliment to the meat. We also tried out their BBQ sauce with the sandwich (not shown) and it was tangy with a good depth of flavour.

The Review

Walking around Seaside, we were tempted to try some take-out BBQ from a side door of the larger McKeown’s Restaurant. Being BBQ connoisseurs, something called a “pulled pork sundae” especially caught our eye. Of course we couldn’t pass on trying their ribs as well. It was a little late in the day and unfortunately, the ribs had been left under heating lamps (and therefore kind of dried out), then were warmed up in the microwave (yikes!) and then slathered with sauce. The pulled pork sundae was made and then we headed outside in the sun to try out our fare.

The ribs were expectantly dried out, but the flavour that was there was alright and they did have a nice smoke ring. The BBQ sauce was better than store bought but nothing to write home about. Overall, they could have been good ribs, but the way in which they served them, made them a little underwhelming.

The pulled pork sundae had a lot of promise but fell flat because of one main issue. Instead of using a thicker BBQ baked bean, these ones were watery. Join that with a wet coleslaw and the whole thing ended up a soggy mess (see second photo). Every component of the sundae had a decent flavour so if they fix up the sogginess then this could be a killer walking around type food. In fact, it is something we might try once we get the smoker going for the season.
