Root Beer – House-made root beer on tap.
Price: $3

Rating: ★★★★☆

The Review

We were surprised to see a drink cart at the Good Food Here pod on Belmont and were extra excited because this one served house-made rootbeer on tap. We really enjoy a good rootbeer and we’ve even tried our hand at making some at home. This rootbeer was spicy and sweet with no foam and just enough carbonation. It was so tasty that we got a second round to go.

Being a brew house they also have a rotation of their house made ales from 12-8pm Thursday – Saturday.

Aybla Grill – Lamb Gyro

The Food

Lamb Gyro – Grilled lamb shwarama served in a Greek pita w/ tzatziki, onion, parsley & tomato (tabouleh), and feta cheese
Price: $5.50

Rating: ★★★★½

The Review

When you are doing a food tour, you sometimes worry that you might not be as excited by food that you are tasting at the end of the day even though you might have thought it fabulous if you ate it first thing. By the time we got to Aybla grill to have their lamb gyro, we had already eaten a LOT of food. Yet this lamb gyro might be the best gyro/shwarama/donair we have ever had.

The gyro was stuffed with lots of well spiced ground lamb cut off the spit, fresh tabouleh, garlicky tzatziki and the feta was worth every bit of the extra 50 cents. The pita was soft and chewy and the whole thing didn’t get too sloppy. This is definitely on our must eat again list!

The Aybla Grill has 3 locations: 925 SW Alder, SW 5th and Oak and the one we ate at, 4290 SE Belmont (Good Food Here pod).

The Review

So far on this blog, we have avoided the Mexican food trucks. Part of the reason may be because they are so ubiquitous in the United States and there are so many other types of carts to go to, they’ve been kind of passed over in favour of grilled cheeses and smores. On our last trip to Portland, we brought some food reviewing back up. Now that there were 4 of us, it let us try more things by eating less of each item as we would split it four ways. It also got us out of our own comfort zone to try things we might have passed on including the Azul Tequila Mexican Taqueria cart at the A La Carts pod.

Two very large and solid burritos were set down on the table and knowing we were heading to more food carts, they looked a little daunting. Undeterred, we tried some of each burrito. The chorizo burrito had lots of flavour especially when we reached the middle of the burrito. You could really taste the distinct flavors of the chorizo, black beans and the cilantro from the pico de gallo. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the classico burrito. It started out bland and continued to be bland all the way through. The plain refried beans and sour cream only added to the blandness. The only thing that saved it was the side of red sauce provided, liberally doused onto the burrito. It was not the worst burrito in the world but it could have used some spicing up.

We never did finish these two large burritos, it was just too much food. If you are looking for a good, cheap, filling meal then these burritos will fit the bill. If you are on a one day eating tour of Portland’s food carts, this might be one to avoid.

The Review

Crème brûlée is a favorite dessert of ours. Even though we were full from partaking in many other food carts that day, we couldn’t pass up the crème brûlée (or the smore or the marshmallow. Oh my!) The crème brûlées and smores are torched while you wait. That’s how they got me with the homemade marshmallow. How could you pass on trying a habeñero, cilantro and lime flavored homemade marshmallow for a dollar?

I brought the sweets back to the group of weary food travelers and we all shared the sugary goodness. The lime essence crème brûlée was thick and rich with a perfectly crispy top and a subtle lime flavour. It was quite good and the only drawback is the size of the crème brûlée is quite small for the price, unlike our previously reviewed crème brûlée at Christiano’s Pizza.

The smore was reminiscent of camping trips but was more successful at being melted then I ever have been with a fire and similar ingredients. While the graham crackers and Hershey chocolate squares are the old standbys, the homemade marshmallow really makes this treat special.

Now to the more unusual treat, the habeñero, cilantro and lime marshmallow. You get two for a dollar so we each got a bite. The marshmallow was incredibly soft and light. It was sweet but not that harsh sweetness you get from store bought brands. The lime flavour was dominant and there was not much in the way of cilantro flavour. The heat comes later, giving you a nice, not too strong, warm mouth feel.

Because this cart was serving dessert, we hit this cart last after a long day of food cart eating. Big mistake! After sampling their food, we wanted more but there was absolutely no room left. I can’t wait to get back to Portland and see what crème brûlée flavours will be available next time. I heard there has been coconut, a personal favourite!
