The Review

Quite a few Canadians think of Bellingham as only Bellis Fair Mall and the other big box stores that line Meridian east of the I-5. If you venture to the west of the freeway, you’ll find a small city filled with funky independent stores and restaurants. Here Fiamma Burger is a contemporary burger joint with a west coast vibe. The curved walls are covered in strips of wood, the tables are raw wood and a long wooden communal table stretches the length of the seating area. The place emphasizes  fresh, all-natural food and has a variety of different types of meat or non-meat options for their burgers.

We decided on a chicken sausage burger with yam fries and a beef Fiamma burger with cheese and garlic fries and ordered them at the till. Beside the till were many options for sauces (spicy mustard, yellow mustard, ketchup, mayo, chipotle ketchup, curry mayo, BBQ) to customize your burger or your fry dipping. Our baskets of food were brought out to us as everything is made to order.

The chicken sausage burger was extremely tasty and juicy. Juices were literally dripping through the wrap. The bun was extremely fresh with a nice crispness to the outside. The yam fries were cooked perfectly with just enough crunch and the chili lime spice was a good complement to the yam flavor. The chipotle ketchup was also good with these fries.

The Fiamma burger was fresh and the meat had good beef flavour but it was a little on the bland side. With the fresh bun, veggies and good cheese, it still was a decent burger. It’s possible the burger seemed a little bland compared to the strong flavour of the garlic fries. The large portion of fries was smothered in Parmesan cheese, garlic and parsley and were so addictive!

Fiamma Burger has quality burgers for a reasonable price. If you want something different than just a typical beef burger then this is the place to head to. Don’t forget the garlic fries!

The Review

Hearing the hype that Five Guys Burgers and Fries is the best burger in the US according to the most recent Zagat survey and hearing friends talk about how good it is, we finally took a trip down to Bellingham to try it for ourselves.

We ordered one of their regular bacon cheese burgers, a little cheeseburger, a regular order of fries and a regular order of cajun fries (yes, cajun fries!).  First impressions were that you get a hell of a lot of fries – more than can fit in the cups provided. They were premium fries, crispy with the skins on that reminded us both of New York Fries. The cajun spice was very similar to the California spice that NY Fries has.

But the main attraction here is the burger. When you order a burger at Five Guys, you need to know that a “regular” burger is two patties and a “little” burger is one. Also the burgers come straight up as meat, cheese, bun. All condiments have to be ordered (FREE!) and they have quite a lot of them. The little cheese was ordered with grilled onions, relish, mustard and ketchup on while the regular bacon cheese burger got pickles, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, mustard and ketchup. The hand formed patties are juicy with lots of flavour, so much that you can barely taste the bacon on the 2 patty regular bacon cheese burger.

The guys working behind the counter were really friendly and looked like they were enjoying their jobs. They ask if it is your first time at their restaurant and if it is, they will walk you through the ordering process. At one point they started singing along with the piped in music in the restaurant.

Five Guys is primarily a burger and fry joint, they don’t have too much else in the form of offerings other than hot dogs (which I have yet to see anybody eat) and drinks. But one thing really stood out at me, and it obviously goes with the quality of their fries, is that they have malt vinegar, something you usually only see reserved for Fish and Chip restaurants.

Overall, I would have to say this is not only one of the best fast-food type burgers or fries we have ever had, it is one of the best burgers we have had period. Although the prices may be a little bit higher than most other fast food joints, you have to remember their standard burger is 2 patties and the quality and freshness is above all. I would say in terms of what you get for your buck, it really is a great value.

We have since found out there are a couple locations in Vancouver area and will be doing a comparison visit soon.
