The Review

We came to Mike’s Tavern after seeing this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. We had high expectations because of this and it did not disappoint. In the small tavern, the owner and servers were  friendly and knew a number of the customers by name. They even made us first timers feel like regulars. We sat at a long communal table in the middle of the place – tight between the booths on one side and the bar on the other  – and ordered a bowl of chili and a chili dog. We anxiously waited for our food while ogling the other customers’ bowls of chili and chili cheese fries while the regulars cheered on the local college football team playing on screens around the bar.

When our food arrived, we were amazed. Each item can be topped with cheese, onions and/or jalapenos for an extra cost. But what a mound full of cheese you get for an extra $0.50! The chili bowl was spicy and flavorful with a good layer of tasty grease on top that was sopped up with the oyster crackers. The hot dog (on top of the beans) could barely be seen under the chili and cheese. The bun was soft and the dog was ok but the rich meaty chili was the star of the show. It made us want to order another bowl of chili.

The whole experience at Mike’s Chili Parlor was great. We wish we had a tavern in our neighbourhood that was half as friendly as Mike’s and with a chili nearly as good! You always know a place is going to be good when they basically serve only one item and serve it well. That is why a place like Mike’s stays in business for generations.

Please note: Because Mike’s Tavern is a bar in Washington State, you must be 21 to eat here.
